Alors qu'elle était au collège et qu'elle se trouvait dans un train bondé, Saku Fujigaya fait une crise d'anémie au milieu des passagers, qui ne remarquèrent rien. L'adolescente en a l'habitude: personne ne fait jamais attention à elle, mais elle aurait bien eu besoin d'un coup de main tandis qu'elle étouffe. Celui-ci survient de manière inespérée lorsque quelqu'un lui ouvre une fenêtre, la conduit à l'infirmerie suite à son évanouissement sur le quai et lui ramène même son sac pendant qu'elle était inconsciente. La seule trace qui lui reste de son mystérieux bienfaiteur est une note laissée dans ses affaires, contenant le nom de Ryôsuke Sakura et un numéro de téléphone qui s'avère erroné. Ébranlée par ce geste désintéressé, Saku se décide à lui écrire une lettre et à porter à son tour son aide à quiconque se retrouvant en détresse. Ce n'est qu'au lycée que l'adolescente entend de nouveau le nom "Sakura": celui de son camarade de classe Haruki, dont le grand frère se prénomme... Ryôsuke. Par contre, le cadet semble peu désireux de la mettre en contact avec son aîné, mais en persévérant et en apprenant à connaître les Sakura, Saku découvre que la vérité n'est pas exactement telle qu'elle se l'imaginait... Un shojo dont l'intrigue semble d'abord toute simple, mais les découvertes de Saku démontreront que tel n'est pas le cas et qu'il y a même erreur sur la personne. Il devient dès lors aussi intéressant d'apprendre ce qui s'est déroulé en coulisses suite à l'évanouissement de l'adolescente que de voir les personnages évoluer au contact les uns des autres, et une belle profondeur se déploie ainsi dans leurs questionnements et leurs prises de conscience. On met de plus de côté tout élan mélodramatique pour construire leurs relations de manière naturelle. À cet effet, le scénario s'harmonise avec les dessins aériens aux encrages soignés, qui confèrent aux visages des expressions travaillées n'ayant pas besoin de mots pour être parfaitement saisies par les lecteurs.
