Alors qu'une jeune femme a l'habitude de chanter en allant au puits afin de rapporter de l'eau dans la maison à l'orée de la forêt, où elle soigne son père, un loup l'observe silencieusement. La bête est amoureuse du chant de la paysanne, mais le jour où le vieil homme décède, elle cesse de chanter. La bête rencontre alors un magicien, pendant la chasse, qui lui offre le don de la parole humaine, qu'il doit aller chercher dans le nid d'un aigle géant. De retour à la maison de la paysanne, le loup approche en parlant d'une voix humaine. Il souhaite que la femme reprenne son chant et qu'elle ne se retourne jamais. En échange, il lui racontera les histoires de la forêt. Seulement, le grelot à l'origine de son pouvoir de parler alerte les proies de sa présence en tintant et le loup ne peut bientôt plus se nourrir. [SDM] |

Ce conte est illustré de dessins à la plume peints dans des teintes aquarellées assez sombres. L'histoire se déroule dans un Nord lointain, elle crée un lieu de rencontre entre l'imaginaire des animaux sauvages et celui des humains, à travers une atmosphère sylvestre presque mythologique. Deux réalités en apparence irréconciliables: la culture humaine et le monde des bêtes s'agenceront de manière à ce que la jeune femme finisse par maîtriser la langue des loups. Ainsi, l'histoire ne rend jamais le loup noir trop candide, mais elle dépasse la figure classique du redoutable prédateur afin de redonner de la légitimité à son existence. [SDM] |
